Guidelines For Writing Attractive Web Pages

Many people are thinking about owning websites - which is a good thing as there are many advantages that come with the ownership of a site. You might even be one of them. If you are, then you have probably have skimmed through a couple of pages looking for a design that will inspire you to come up with your own unique style.

That said; there are a couple of rules that should be taken into consideration if you are to be successful in coming up with an attractive page. Here are the most important.

The first thing to keep in mind is the ease with which your page can be read. Here some basic rules tend to apply. For instance; avoid using two or more font styles on a page as it makes it look untidy, avoid the use of underlining titles for emphasis. Reserve it for links and instead use the bold effect to make your headings bigger. Avoid the use of vivid backgrounds as they tend to make text difficult to read and many more.

Next thing to consider is the appearance of your page when it is printed. This is where it gets a little bit tricky. It is a fact that while most printers will not print the background by default, they will print the text in the same color it appears on the web page. Here's an example, assuming you used the color yellow on your text with a black background, then the yellow text would be printed against a white background (the color of paper). In such instances where you oversee the possibility of someone printing your pages it is advisable to use a dark font color against a light background. You can also provide a link to a printable page. Just ensure it is placed at the top of the page where it can be seen clearly.

Third thing is to try and use graphics wherever is appropriate. Just remember to optimize a graphic if it makes your page load at a much slower rate. Programs such as paint shop pro can do that for you. If on the other hand your page is full of graphics, you can remedy the situation by using a downsized thumbnail that links to the actual version of the graphics.

Sound is the fourth thing you should consider. Sound is fully advocated for any web page on the internet. However, if it is embedded and auto starts then you can always turn it down and leave it all up to the viewer to change it according to his needs.

Finally, it is very important that you test your page using different browsers. In the PC world, that means using Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Google Chrome and Safari. It is highly unlikely that one day they will all be fully compatible so it is advised to design your page with all of them in mind.
