The internet has made it possible for people to get a business started without needing a massive amount of start up cash. As long as you can commit to putting time toward your goal, you will eventually achieve the results you desire. That said, you will have more luck if you start off on the right foot. Here are five things to keep in mind when designing your first website.
1. Don't go overboard - Don't try to do too much with your first site. Instead, it's a better idea to take advantage of web design software or a plugin like Wordpress. Keep the site fairly simple, and focus on creating good content rather than on adding bells and whistles to your site.
2. Learn some basic SEO - Search engine optimization will help get you noticed. Learn some of the basics of keyword research and link building skills, and be sure to include your best keywords in the titles of your posts. At the same time, don't let SEO become the only method you use to obtain visibility.
3. Learn some basic social media skills - Research methods used to promote your site through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Reddit, and LinkedIn. This can help attract a community of loyal followers who may be interested in content on your site. Social media is the best way to connect users with content that they would be interested in, but wouldn't know to look for in a search engine.
4. Most users are casual - Remember that most people who use the internet use it casually. They may not have the latest Flash plugin installed on their computer, might not have the fastest internet connection, and might not be all that familiar with computer interfaces. Make your website easy to use, and make sure that special software isn't required just to use the basic functions of the site.
5. Put the user in control - Make the user feel like they are in control of their visit to your site. Don't play sound or video files automatically. A user should know what will happen next after they click on something. The most important elements of the site should be the biggest and most visually attractive elements of the site. By all means, some of the content of your site should be surprising. The interface, on the other hand, shouldn't have any surprises in store.
