What You Should Know About Designing Your Website

If you are designing your website from scratch, or creating a custom web design you will have to take into consideration a few key aspects that can help you design it effectively. These aspects are related to the placement of design elements on the webpage. Firstly, consider the different elements you want on the page. Second, evaluate how each element relates to the goals of the page. Thirdly, determine how all the elements fit with each other on the page. Here is a detailed understanding of each of these elements:

Elements that will be placed on the page

You will have to place a selection of elements on a webpage. Some of them are: textual content, images, headlines and navigation. Knowing the characteristics of these elements will help you decide where they should be placed on the page. For instance, as navigation is typically placed at the top and left of a page, you too should ideally place it at these locations.

Relationship between page goals and each element

One of the key aspects that can help you determine the placement of an element is the goals you have for the page. For instance, if your goal is to have visitors click on advertisements on your page, you should ideally place them at locations where people look for them. You can even place them where they are likely to grab visitors' attention.

Placement of elements in relation to each other

Another key aspect of webpage designing is the placement of each element in relation to the other. One of the easiest ways to determine it is to consider the context of the position of each element. For instance, if an advertisement block is placed at the center of a text block, it could mean that there is a link between the two elements. Similarly, if you include a horizontal line to separate the headline from the by-line or the content, you will be creating a disconnect between the two elements. So, each element plays a crucial role on a page and where they are placed in relation to another element can influence the effectiveness of the page.

In addition to these three key aspects, you can take into consideration a few more to make your website design more impactful. Here are two of them:

Design techniques used on the page

The design techniques you use on the page can play a role making your website attractive. An easy design technique that can be used is centering. When you center the elements on your page, they will typically begin at the center (moving horizontally). So, one half of the elements on your page will be placed one side of it, while the second half will be on the other.

Identify the page's points of interest

A point of interest on your page is the focal point of a design. In other words, it is the area on the page to which your eyes are drawn. You can influence the interest of items, by altering the amount of space that surrounds them. For instance, a focal point on your web page may be an image. By taking into consideration the other page elements, and altering the margins around the image, you can make a design that is capable of enhancing interest in it.
