Some Basic Rules Of Good Web Design

If you are just about to start building a website or thinking of revamping your existing site you should consider these basic practices of good web design. They are by no means the only things to consider, but they are all very important and a great place to start.

1. Avoid Gimmicks, Especially On Your Home Page - Loud music, pop-ups, ads that expand over your page etc. We've all seen them, and in most cases we hate them. Try to avoid anything that will annoy your customers, especially on your home page. If you must have these elements on your website then make sure you only introduce them once you are sure the customer will stay on your website. Most people will leave a website in the first 3 seconds of hitting the home page so make sure you don't give them a reason to do so.

2. Easy To Navigate - The menu structure of your website is very important and should be given some serious throughout before the website is built. It should be easy to follow and logical. Make sure the menu is visible at all times on your website.

3. Solid Web Hosting - A fast loading website should always be one of your main concerns. Internet these days is all about speed and fast information. If your page doesn't open quickly enough people will simply leave, there are plenty of other sites out there that they can look at instead. As much as possible make sure that your images are properly optimized and not to large. Try to keep auto-running multimedia to a minimum instead offering links to run the media. Text pretty much loads instantly so feel free to use all the text you want and just manage everything else.

4. Do You Really Need That Splash Page? - In most cases splash pages no longer excite people and entertain, they simply make your customer wait before they can get to your websites information. Think about your returning customers, they will have to watch it each time they come back, this will surly annoy them.

5. Have a Clear Message - A lot of websites can be confusing. You hit the site and the message isn't obvious, there are a lot of things going on, a lot of messages all pulling you in different directions. Try to establish a very clear message for your website. What is the message do you want it to send to your customers? When your potential customers hit your website you want them know exactly what it is you offer straight away. Otherwise you may lose them thinking that your website wasn't what they were looking for when in fact it was!

6. Consistent Design - Try to use a consistent look and feel throughout your website. This will make your customers feel comfortably moving around your site and should also cut down on your design time when adding new content. Keep a consistent, easy to use menu in the same place at all times.

7. Avoid 'Under Construction' Signs - In most cases having pages or sections of your website as under construction screams unprofessional. It is far better to just leave them off the website until they are ready to be added. There are times when you may want to do this to build anticipation and it may be appropriate. But avoid placing it there with the attitude of 'I'll get around to that someday'; chances are it will be a long time before that happens.
