Please follow the steps below to give images rounded corners using Photoshop CS4.
Step 1) First of all you will need to open Photoshop CS4. Open the image that you want to give rounded corners to by going to 'File' and then 'Open'. Ensure that the image is on its own layer (you can check this by looking at your 'Layers Pallet').
Step 2) Next we will create a new layer. You can do this by clicking on the 'New Layer' icon at the bottom of the layers pallet. Once created you will need to select the new layer and then using the 'rounded rectangle tool' draw a rectangle ensuring that you select the area of the photograph that you wish to be the final image i.e. your image will be the area that is captured inside the rectangle.
N.B: You have probably noticed that the rectangle is filled with a colour and therefore obscures the photo. Don't worry about this for now as in the next stage we will be removing the colour from the rectangle.
Stage 3) You will now need to go back to your 'Layer Pallet'. Double click on the layer which you drew your rectangle on. This will bring up the 'Layer Style Pallet'. Within the pallet you will see a tool called 'Fill Opacity' which is under the heading 'Advanced Blending'. You will need to select the slider or adjust the percentage in the box to the left of the slider to 0%.
Step 4) You will now need to go back to the 'Layers Pallet'. There are two tabs next to 'Layers' at the top of the pallet; 'Channels' and 'Paths', click on the one titled 'Paths'. On the right hand side there is a black arrow, click on it and a drop down menu will appear. From the list click on 'make selection'. The 'Make Selection' box will appear. Ensure that 'Feather Radius' is set to 0 px, and anti-aliased is ticked, then click 'OK'.
Step 5) Back in your Photoshop main menu click on 'Edit' and select 'Copy Merged' from the drop down list. Next you will need to create a new document that is large enough to accommodate your image.
N.B If you wish the image to be placed on a transparent background ensure that you select transparent for the background property.
Step 6) In the new document go to 'Edit' and then 'Paste'.
Final Thoughts: That's it, you are done! You should now have an image with rounded corners that you can add to webpage's or other publications. Hopefully this article has introduced you to some of the simple yet powerful tools utilized by Photoshop CS4.
