Launching a Site - Insider Tips

Website Hosting Tips - Launching a Site

If you wait until after you launch your site to start working on search engine marketing, you're going to be spending a lot of days watching the paint dry. It takes time for even the best designed, most highly optimized site to start pulling traffic and getting a little notice.

So, before the development of your site and during its construction and tweaking phases, there are a number of SEM steps you should take so you're locked and loaded - ready to launch a marketing blast the day you go live.

You want that commercial web site to start kicking out cash ASAP. Up to that point it's been all outgo and no income so, while you're waiting for your site to be completed, take the following advise from your website hosting provider so you're ready to market your site the day it launches.

First, What Not to Do With Your Site

Don't start any marketing or SEO tactics until the site is completed, gone through beta testing, and is as viable and functional as you can make it at this point. If you market a half-completed site with lots of UNDER CONSTRUCTION pages, visitors are going to be annoyed and search engine bots will slam you for uploading inactive site pages. Don't let any page of your site be Googled until it's ready.

You can identify which pages you don't want spidered in your site's HTML code. Any way, if it appears on the navigation bar, there had better be something to read or see or do. Or, you run the risk of annoying potential, long-time customers and search engine bots that are always looking for ways to increase the relevance of search engine results pages. A blank page hinders a user's search and you lose Google points.

Before (or While) Your Site Is Constructed

An archives section is a good place to start. Write up some general, informational articles on the topic of your site. These shouldn't be sell pieces. Instead, they should provide the visitor with useful, unbiased information.

Build a Public Knowledge Base

Generate 10 pieces between 600 and 1200 words each. Provide each piece with a header that includes one (and only one) of your keywords. Upload these articles to the site's archives. Keep adding new content every few days if possible.

You can also use articles from sites like Helium and GoArticles for free content of interest to a typical visitor. However, these syndicated articles won't help your positioning with search engines. Bots know this content appears on 25 other sites so it isn't green. But it is a service to your readers. So, build a big knowledge base of good information before and during site constructed.

PSD to Drupal Conversion Greatly Improves a Website's Performance

When it comes to developing high-performance websites, Drupal is one of the best content management systems around. Businesses would benefit tremendously from the PSD to Drupal conversions as they can get websites created with all the latest features. Creating a website using Drupal is not easy as it involves complex processes but the websites that are created using this format fetch high returns in terms of increased traffic and search engine rankings. Several business organizations are getting their websites converted into Drupal format to have an edge in the highly competitive online marketplace.

Being an open source content management system, Drupal offers a cost-effective alternative to improve the performance of websites. It has great compatibility with Windows, Mac OS X and many other operating systems. Photoshop is used to design websites and provides great freedom to the web designers but the PSD format in which the files of this software are saved do not offer the required compatibility for use on the internet. Converting PSD to Drupal would not only help in creating web-compatible sites but also enhance their performance. These websites would also be highly customizable and designed in tune with the latest trends in the world of internet.

The conversion of PSD files to the Drupal format involves slicing of the files and coding them using HTML or XHTML. Visual attributes to the websites are defined with the help of Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), thereby providing uniformity to it. All these files are then integrated into Drupal which allows the user to manage their websites in a better way. During the entire PSD to Drupal conversion process, the fonts, colors and navigational functions are perfectly defined to enhance the look and performance of the websites. Hand-coding of the PSD files is very important in this conversion process as it provides greater compatibility with the web browsers.

What Is a Homepage and What Is Its Purpose?

Like a great shop window display or a beautifully designed advertisement in a newspaper or magazine, your website's homepage should quickly and simply sum up what it is you do and what services or information you offer. More than likely it is the first page a visitor to your site will see. Just as you would walk out of a store if you felt uneasy, your visitors will be quick to hit that back button if your homepage doesn't seem inviting and professional.
So what is a homepage? At its basic level, a homepage is usually the main page on your website, or at least the initial point of contact when someone types in your URL. It is the gateway through which visitors will be able to explore the rest of your site. As such, it allows you to mould a visitor's browsing experience from the moment they land on your site.
With this in mind, your homepage can serve several purposes. If you are running an online shop, for example, then your homepage can make new customers aware of the types of products you sell and also alert them to the latest deals. If your goods are more tailored to an individual's needs, then the homepage can act here as the starting point for their purchasing experience, guiding them through a process which will eventually lead to a sale.

What Questions Do You Need to Ask on a Contact Form?

Every website should have at least one method of getting in touch with the owner, be it to pass comment, make suggestions or, in most cases, to enquire about the services being offered. In the continuing fight against spam an email address on your website is not always a great idea, so most people fall back on the tried-and-trusted 'contact us' form.
Forms have become such a part of web design that many people simply throw them online without giving them a second thought, but it is vital that your form gives off the right message about the type of company you are. Firstly, the form has to look good, or at least conform to the style of your website. A few simple CSS additions can transform a contact form by applying the correct fonts and adding a custom 'submit' button. It is also key that your form works in the same way across multiple browsers; rigorous testing will confirm this.
The thing that a lot of people overlook, however, is what the form is actually asking of your potential contacts. Whether you pick up a PHP form from an internet search or use a form plug-in on your blog, the majority come with five or so questions which every form seems to ask. The question you have to ask yourself is: 'Does that really apply to my customers?'.

Easy User-Friendly Web Navigation

Web sites should be simple and easy to find your way around. If it's too complex, people will log off immediately. It's frustrating to have to go a search bar or a site map to find what it is you're looking for on a site and if someone gets lost, that's their only compass. It's imperative to design a website that is easy to navigate and here's some basic tips to maintaining a user-friendly site. After you make it aesthetically appealing, then you can worry about animation and images. Keeping it organized is crucial.

Building an Appealing Site

Figure out your site's information and have it all laid out and organized so you can determine how and what to build so that it's easy to use. This is considered to be your information architecture. To be structurally appealing for your website consider some of these aspects, particularly if the site is for a corporate or business web page.

- Products: This is the services or products that your business offers.
- Investor Relations: This information is specifically aimed toward the investors of your business and may also be informative to potential investors.
- About: This tells what your business is, what you stand for, your mission, your location and contact information and more information about your business.
- Support: This provides assistance to people on your website, particularly customers. There may be a link that's not working properly or if your site is an e-commerce site, they need to know how to contact someone to help them place an order.

3 Reasons Why Minimalistic Website Design Works Best for Business Websites

When a website visitor visits a business website he/she is not expecting stunning visuals or creative navigation. What he is expecting is that information be presented to him in a manner that is easy to assimilate and understand. Nothing more and definitely nothing less!

This is where a minimalistic website design enters the picture. Here are three important reasons why designers must focus on minimalism when it comes to the design of their ecommerce websites.

Makes less clutter

When it comes to design for business websites, the message must be clear, concise and generate the necessary impact. This is the reason why the design must appear uncluttered. This is possible if the designer focuses on minimalistic design. This is how they can ensure that the message of the website is delivered the way it is supposed to be, and with the necessary impact.

Looks more professional

A minimalistic design looks more professional. The fact that such design makes use of only those elements that are absolutely needed and does away with those elements that are not, means that it looks more practical and credible. Website visitors are given the feeling that the website is 'ready to do business' and doesn't want to waste any of their time. This fact is widely appreciated by them.

10 Things a Love Website Should Have

After careful consideration I have collected 10 things I believe a website about love should have. You don't have to have or use everything on the list but, if you don't know where to start and want to create a love website, here are some ideas that you can work with. You can always change things around and/or use other applications, games and other information to create the perfect love website that will work especially for you.

1. A color pallet that uses: pink, red, peach, lavender and maybe purple combination

(Some love or dating site use red, white, grey and black or a combination or neon or pastel color combination but, choosing a color pallet is really up to you. Remember use what works for you!)

2. Images of hearts, hugs, kiss, couples holding hands or laughing

(You can always ad a Gallery or Library showing several images of romantic couples or romantic quotes)

3. Compatibility tests, love meters, love quizzes or interactive games for reader to try out

(Remember an interactive website will always bring repeat visitors back to you. Visitors enjoy websites that they can play around in and tell there friends about-And you know what that means, more visitors!)

4. Articles that talk about love and explain love relationships

(Remember you are designing a LOVE website so write about-you know it!-LOVE! Write about dating, romantic vacation ideas, special gifts, relation ship advice, and even scientific research on love! Also remember to speak from the heart, readers can always tell!)

Tools of the Trade - CSS

CSS is one of the more obscure sets of initials confronting the newcomer to website building: FTP, HTML, CSS. The initials CSS stand for 'Cascading Style Sheets' though quite why the originators of the internet chose to make such an obscure expression for a simple concept is beyond me.

It all becomes very clear then we split up the phrase:

Style Sheets

Style sheets do what it says on the box: they set the style of your web page. They are site-wide; that is they apply equally to every page on your site so that you don't need to set up the styling for every page on your site.

The style sheet fixes the width and number of columns, the background colours, the size and font of your text etc.

Cascading

Cascading refers to the sequence in which style sheets - if there is more than one - are read and the priority given when two or more styles seem to clash. In general the latest comes first. This allows you to over-ride the standards set up by your Site Building software, either universally or locally.

Making My Own Website - 3 Things You Need to Know

When I'm making my own website there's three things that I need to take into consideration. Most people assume that they can just jump right in and build a website. You can make a website but would anybody ever see it? That is what we are going to be talking about, how to get people to be able to find your site on the web.

Choosing a Domain Name- When choosing a domain name there's several things that you need to consider. First, make sure the name you have chosen is relevant to your site. In other words, if your sites about dogs don't let your domain name speak of cats. Keep the name relevant to what your site is about. Secondly, keep it short and simple. The shorter and simpler the name of your site is, the easier it will be for you and your visitors to remember. The third thing is, choose a.com address. It has been my experience that the search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing all the seem to favor a.com address over a.net,.org and so on.

Countdown for the Best Candy bar Logo Designs of All Time

Just as important as the taste of a candy bar is its branding which includes its logo design. Since the brand mark and the packaging is the first thing that a customer notices in a product, if the customer is not attracted to the business mark, then it is highly doubtful that he will purchase the product.

There are some candy companies in the industry that have created a brand mark for themselves that‘s as exotic as the product.

Let's look at a countdown for the best candy bar logo designs of all time:

At Number 5: Three Musketeers:

Based on the old story of the three musketeers, their emblem reflects the history and culture of the story along with bright colors that make this monogram attractive at sight. Colors used for the symbol are the colors for the French national flag that give an aura of patriotism while the shield that encases the number 3 give a hint of history. To keep the design from being too formal, thick and slightly slanted fonts are used that give a hint of playfulness to the symbol that is perfect for a chocolate company.

The Difference Between SEO and SEM

The business world is increasingly more digital by the day. As a result, marketing strategies have greater demands. Small and big businesses alike are seeking fine-tuned strategies to market, brand, and increase traffic to their websites. Since the competition on the digital scene is not decreasing anytime soon, it is within the best interest of a business to become informed with the largest online marketing tools: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

SEO is geared to acquiring natural, "organic" rankings on a business website. When the term organic is used in terms of online marketing, it is meant that these rankings are the product of unpaid advertisements that are placed in the middle of search homepages. The goal and desired end result of SEO is to optimize a website and increase the website's ranking within the engine results, like Google.

In order for search engine results to be organic, the results need to occur through the content of a website. The content is what allows the search engine algorithm to index. Some of the other factors the engine specialists are concerned with include page rank, keywords, link building, and one way links.

One of the most helpful and beneficial content-related ways to boost SEO is through back links. By visiting various blogs or forums, a business owner can form relationships and make comments on field-related concerns. There is typically a field where the individual can place his/her website URL, which allows for back links and increased SEO rankings.

Why You Need a Friendly 404 Error Page

If you visit a page of a website that has been moved, deleted or renamed, you'll see a '404' error page telling you that there's no page at that address. If your website doesn't have a custom 404 error page, users will see the horrible default error screen with a warning message.

What can cause a 404 error page to show?

These are the most common reasons why a visitor will see a 404 error page:

The URL of the page has been changed -This could be caused by the name of the page being changed, updating the URL to match. For example www.silktide.com/latest-news might have been changed to www.silktide.com/news. If many other websites link to the old page, the link will no longer work, taking visitors now to a 404 error page.

The link you're following is misspelt - The incoming link might have been misspelled when it was created, taking you to a page which doesn't actually exist.

The page has been deleted - Pages can be deleted, but it might still have incoming links that haven't been deleted.

The website is offline - The website is currently down so the page can't be displayed.

The website has been deleted - The website is no longer running. The link you've followed might be from a site which still thinks the website exists. If the visitor sees a 404 error message, they might also assume this is the case for all of the reasons above, so it's possible they'll never try to visit this website ever again.
Why is the default error bad?

Important Factors to Be Considered for Web Design

1. Using Audio and Video on the main page.

If your customer, client or visitor is going to spend long time long time on your website to purchase or reader whatever may be the reason you deserve them to be on your site the video and audio embedded on your site may annoy them which leads to leaving your site. But some sites surely need some audio or video file to be embedded in such cases give them the control of the player such as volume, mute, stop, etc...

2. Finding products or services

Let the design be simple and clear by which the user can go to the desired page of your site in a single mouse click. This is almost not possible for sites with many WebPages hosted in such cases you can use search boxes which would easy get to their desired page with 2 or 3 mouse clicks. Don't use multi drop down menus which annoy sometimes leads to leave your site and also don't use flash based menu which loads slower than normal full webpage.

3. Using splash pages

When you use splash page which would make the visitor to hit the back button on the browser or to close your site since they don't see what actually the website is about. But if you have some description and catchy words about your website which could lead your visitor to browse your website the splash page is the best option to increase your traffic.

Pre Built Template Vs Customized PSD to XHTML Conversion

SEO experts have been warning companies about the hazards of using pre-built and poorly coded templates. These poorly designed templates block search traffic because the latest search engine crawlers find difficulty in interpreting their non-standard codes. The service of PSD to XHTML conversion professionals comes into significance in this scenario.

Professionals who convert PSD to XHTML make your Web site search engine friendly by converting the non-standard coding elements present in different types of templates into a highly searchable semantic markup codes. By leveraging the highly flexible XTML conversion professionals help you get a custom designed Web site that is friendlier to both search engines and users, thereby increasing its page rank in top search engines. This would translate it into better growth and business opportunities.

While it is true that pre-built templates offer you the "pick-and-drop" solution, they also pose a serious challenge to your Web design because of their rigid nature. Pre-built templates cannot be edited, meaning you will not be able to create a custom design out of them. On the other hand, the SEO-friendly codes implemented in PSD to XHTML process are hand written, so they can be customized according to client specifications. PSD to XHTML coding never disappoints you in different platforms and browsers. These highly semantic codes are compatible with all versions of prevailing operating systems and browser types.

The Secrets To Online Success Aren't Such A Secret

The other day I was having a talk with a colleague that I had lost contact with over the past few years. It was a wonderful time to catch up, right before Christmas and to remember all of the fun and exciting projects we've done together over the past several years. He confided in me that in 2012 he would be leaving Sony to start his own online presence, an entrepreneurial dream that he's held closely to his heart for several years and he asked me what recommendations I could provide him to help him ensure success, after all he was nervous, all the risk was standing on his shoulders. At the same time it was delightful to literally feel the passion in his voice and the anticipation of the rewards he could earn as a result of his hard work. Well after that discussion, I decided that it would be valuable to share with everyone my thoughts on what are the most important aspects of ensuring online success. I hope that you enjoy this read and it opens your eyes to something you hadn't previously considered. If it helps you or your business to improve even marginally then I've accomplished my goals, after all successful businesses are built by one small accomplishment after another. Please note that my advice is assuming that you've already done your homework - business plan, competitive analysis, SWOT analysis, etc. and determined that your products and services are competitively viable in the industry. Now, assuming this, let's get started.

In order to best position your online presence for success, you should ensure that your presence successfully accomplishes the following baseline requirements:

- It must be visually appealing and match the branding that your target customers desire

o Simply put, if your website is not visually appealing or does not match the branding that your target customers desire, they subconsciously may decide to purchase products or services elsewhere.

o Actively compare your site to your competitors (if you don't know who your competitors are, find out by asking colleagues "where would you buy this product/service?"). Also, ask some colleagues to do the same. Sit down and review all of the comparison notes. Categorize any feedback into one of four categories (critical - must address, important should address, nice to have, ignored) and then make a gameplan to ensure that you stay ahead of your competitors by addressing any of the items within the first two categories and possibly the third depending upon your existing revenue, profit margins and budgets. Don't just do this once... at the very least, perform this exercise twice each year (but I recommend quarterly) or you could get caught off guard and won't notice until it's too late and your revenue is negatively impacted! Caution: if you are unable to budget for any important items in this list, you likely have a bigger problem on your hands, because not only are you not keeping up with your competitors, they'll likely increase the gap of their competitive edge even more over the next several months.

CSS - Fun and Fiction

There are numerous ways a Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) can improve our web design and it's not difficult to implement a few to make our website look better and more user-friendly. I'm all about visually appealing websites. Plain or downright unattractive just doesn't cut it with me. With the tools designers like myself have today, there is no excuse not to create a site that can be considered eye candy. And to truly design a spectacular website, you will need to make use of, and fully understand, the concept behind Cascading Styling Sheets, or CSS for short.

With CSS your website can easily be launched into the category of superior designing, and looked upon as a digital work of art. Without it, we're left with only a basic styling framework, and none of the special effect features that CSS allows for.

Take for example text or box shadowing. I love to highlight headers using text shadow because it causes the text to jump out at the visitor, making it easy to see that it is more important than the rest of the text on that page. And let's face it, with most people scanning pages instead of reading every line, we need to design our pages so it grabs a visitor's attention, causing them to slow down a little and take notice.

Box shadowing is a similar concept. Many websites use boxes to contain content, but the main problem with throwing a box up and adding text over it, is normally it doesn't look very pretty, which unfortunately sends a message to the visitor that they can skip over that content. But... if we use a simple box shadow to make the box a little more appealing, the content becomes more attractive, and our chances of the visitor taking the time to read what's in it increases at least two-fold.

Round corners for boxes or images are another way to make your content a little more interesting, and add a little bit of flair. In times past you had to create the box and corners yourself using Photoshop or some other photo editing application and then save the images as a PNG so they maintained their transparency level. Finally, you had to place them in a dozen or so strategically positioned DIV tags, so they all fit together and looked like a single image, and of course hope that every browser out there read the markup the same.
